Coruscate, based out of Surat, Gujarat was the brainchild of Vishal Virani and three of his college friends. Passionate about technology, Vishal and his co-founders decided to create an organisation that would empower small businesses and startups. Coruscate is a platform that reinvents startups and transforms them digitally. Since its founding, the company has grown substantially, and now boasts of a team of 63 with a wide-ranging portfolio. The dynamic team at Coruscate has used the challenge of working in a tier-2 city and turned it into an advantageous opportunity, now looking to bring an MNC culture to Surat.

In conversation with GlobalLinker (GL) Vishal Virani (VV) shares the journey of his company.

GL: Tell us about your business and how it came into being.

VV: We are a custom web/mobile app development company. While it sounds like what everyone else is doing, we are slightly different. Instead of focusing on the services, we focus on technology and the customer. Our solutions, which are customer-centric with technology at the core, reinvent businesses and transform them digitally, thereby helping these  businesses overcome any ground level challenges faced.

For startups, we offer end-to-end solutions. This means when someone comes to us with an idea, we not only help validate the idea but also analyse the market for the idea, design and develop the solution, and test it before going to the market.

Straight out of college, all four of us (the key founders) were clear in that we did not want to grind the mill with a day job. We were passionate about technology, and wanted to create a difference. So, we started working on an idea, Coruscate, which would help businesses think and work differently with the right technology. Four years back, we started this business in Surat, a tier-2 city, with a team of just the four of us. Today, we have built the company to a team of 63, with a good clientele, built entirely through word of mouth.

GL: What are the challenges you have faced in establishing your business?

VV: We were clear about how we wanted to grow right from the start. We were not looking for VC support or investors. We were a bootstrapped company and were dependent on our own money for expansion.

The journey of a bootstrapped company in itself is challenging. To get money, you need to manage good quality projects, which requires quality resources. As a business, we believe the workforce is the ultimate asset and the biggest challenge. This was a challenge for us too. We could not hold on to quality resources as we could not pay them at par with the tier-1 cities, which made us recruit freshers. The attrition rate was high, and we had to spend a lot of time in training the freshers. This is still a challenge; however, we have come a long way since we started. The attrition rate today is lower when compared to the time when we started out.

GL: How did you hear of GlobalLinker? How has it helped you?

VV: GlobalLinker was asking the same interesting questions which we usually discuss with our clients who are startups or enterprises. It seems to be a great tool enabling startups and SMEs to grow.

GL: What is your big business dream?

VV: As you know, we are based in a tier-2 city in Gujarat. We aim to build ourselves in a way that we become the best place to work for tier-2 aspirants. We are striving to bring in the MNC culture with our company here.

GL: What is your message to aspiring entrepreneurs?

VV: It is important to believe in your idea and build it. When you walk the path of a startup, don’t think about VCs and investments, as that will not help you reach the heights you are aiming for. Instead, just concentrate on building your idea the way you want to, and success as well as money will follow. The path less travelled is always full of struggle, but the end result will be sweet and amazing. That’s a guarantee.
